The Black Hills Motorcycle Ride: A Biker’s Paradise

The Black Hills of South Dakota are a mecca for motorcycle enthusiasts, offering some of the most scenic routes in the United States. The winding roads, lush forests, and dramatic landscapes make it a haven for bikers seeking adventure and breathtaking views.

Motorcycle Routes in South Dakota: The Thrill Begins

Your journey begins with the thrill of riding through the heart of the Black Hills. There are numerous routes to choose from, but a few favorites include the Needles Highway, Iron Mountain Road, Spearfish Canyon, and the historic Deadwood.

  • Needles Highway Adventure: This route takes you through some of the most unique rock formations in the world. The narrow tunnels and sharp turns will keep your adrenaline pumping. Make sure to stop at Sylvan Lake, a serene spot surrounded by towering granite spires.
  • Iron Mountain Road (IMR): OK I have been riding for over 30 years and IMR is the BEST RIDE EVER. If you have ever rode the Tail Of The Dragon in NC/TN and freaked out on how amazing it is, once you ride IMR you will be like Tail of the Dragon who. You will find 17 miles, 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 pigtails, 3 tunnels, 2 splits and 4 presidents. And if you have never rode a pig tail on your bike you are truly missing out.
  • Spearfish Canyon Ride: Prepare to be mesmerized by the natural beauty of Spearfish Canyon. The lush canyon walls and the soothing sounds of Spearfish Creek make this ride unforgettable. Don’t forget to visit Bridal Veil Falls for a stunning photo opportunity.
  • Historic Deadwood Visit: Explore the Wild West history of Deadwood, a town known for its colorful past. Stop by the Deadwood Historic District and try your luck at one of the casinos. Don’t miss the reenactments of famous shootouts on Main Street.

Tourist Spots in Black Hills: Unveiling the Beauty

As you ride through the Black Hills, you’ll come across several must-visit tourist spots that showcase the region’s natural splendor and rich history.

  • Badlands National Park Visit: Start your adventure with a visit to the Badlands National Park, a surreal landscape of rugged terrain and dramatic canyons. The loop road offers panoramic views of this otherworldly terrain, and you might spot some bison along the way.
  • Mount Rushmore Exploration: No trip to the Black Hills is complete without gazing upon the iconic Mount Rushmore. Marvel at the sculpted faces of four American presidents carved into the granite cliffs. It’s a breathtaking sight, especially during sunrise or sunset.
  • Custer State Park Wildlife: Get up close and personal with South Dakota’s wildlife at Custer State Park. Here, you can encounter bison, pronghorn, deer, and even bighorn sheep. Take a scenic drive along the Wildlife Loop Road for the best wildlife viewing experience.
  • Crazy Horse Memorial Tour**: Another impressive sculpture in the Black Hills is the Crazy Horse Memorial. This ongoing project aims to honor Native American culture and history. Learn about the ambitious undertaking and admire the colossal statue from the visitor center.

WARNING: Crazy Horse Memorial is a BIG WASTE OF TIME $30 bucks to get in and the statue itself is only about 1/4 done after being working on for over 75 years. As a engineer I did a quick calculation in my head and I figure at the rate they are going they have 214 more years to go before it is finished. The visitor center is AWESOME with lots to see and learn and a few movies that are good so if you are OK with paying $30 for that and don’t care that the statue is a long ways from being done then you should go.

Biker-Friendly Campgrounds: Resting Under the Stars

After a day of thrilling rides and sightseeing, it’s time to set up camp and relish the tranquility of the Black Hills. Here are some biker-friendly campgrounds that offer the perfect respite:

  • Rushmore Cave Campground: Nestled near Mount Rushmore, this campground provides a unique experience with guided tours of Rushmore Cave. Enjoy the amenities and convenience while staying close to major attractions.
  • Custer’s Gulch RV Park & Campground: Situated near Custer State Park, this campground offers easy access to wildlife viewing and scenic drives. It’s an ideal spot to unwind and recharge for the next day’s adventures.
  • Spearfish City Campground: Located in the charming town of Spearfish, this campground is a great base for exploring Spearfish Canyon and nearby attractions. The peaceful setting by Spearfish Creek is perfect for camping.

South Dakota Camping Trip: Fueling Up

After a day on the road and an evening around the campfire, you’ll want to refuel your body with some hearty food. The Black Hills region offers a variety of dining options that cater to bikers and adventurers.

  • Legends Steakhouse (Deadwood): For a taste of the Wild West, dine at Legends Steakhouse in Deadwood. Savor juicy steaks and other Western-inspired dishes in a historic setting.
